Summer is a perfect time to reuse paper towel rolls to create colorful butterflies. Start by wrapping the tube with brown construction paper (or painting it). Next, cut wings from the desired color paper and attach to one side of the tube. An easy way to make wings is to fold a sheet of construction paper and cut out the top half of a heart-shape. Different colors can be layered for a more vibrant butterfly. Apply googly eyes to the front and use a magic marker to draw a smile. Use strips of curled paper or pipe cleaners for antennae and attach them to the top of the tube.

Here is another fun idea using empty paper towel and toilet paper rolls, some paint, paper plates, glue, sissors, and a few decorations. With a little imagination it is easy to transform these emply rolls into your favorite animals.

You can make a circus, or a zoo, or just your favorite critter. Gently fold the cardboard roll to make it easier to cut. With the sissors , trim the tube to shape, making a head, neck and four legs as desired. (Note: the elephant has short, thick legs while the giraffe has long tappered ones.)

Paper towel rolls are a fantastic crafting material because they can be painted and pasted to look like so many different objects. Even very young children can paint and glue basic shapes to make a cute, unique craft. With a little creativity, using paper rolls can teach kids delicate motor skills and a little bit about recycling.
